What does sustainable fashion mean to you?
To me, this means clothing and accessories that are made out of good quality material. The source of the material/fabric is therefore very important. The finished product should also be of good construction and quality so that the user/wearer gets the maximum use out of it. It is becoming more and more pertinent to use raw materials that are from renewable sources and also to ensure that the sourcing and production processes are not detrimental to the
source, maker or end user.
How and when did you start your business?
‘Initially I made things for friends and family because like a lot of people, I enjoy making ‘stuff’ and wanted to explore my creative side. I decided to make the move of setting up a more formal business in 2003.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by abstract concepts of colour and design. I love bold patterns and bright vibrant contrasting colours and at the same time, I like soft, muted, understated colours and textures. I also particularly enjoy the way people, especially in big bustling cities, put their personal style in the way they dress and accessorise.
How does Urbanknit incorporate ‘sustainability’ in its products?
The prints, batiks and woven fabrics are sourced from local African markets and are combined with modern materials like leather, satin, silks and velvets to produce handbags and purses that are fun, funky and wearable. The fabrics are mainly from Nigeria and Ghana and I hope to experiment with fabrics from other African countries in the near future.
The idea is focused on using traditional and locally produced materials so as to support indigenous production and African creativity. For example, the old techniques of making Aso-oke are fast being replaced by the modern synthetic fibers that are in some cases inferior to the ‘oldies’.
Where do you source for your materials?
The markets in Lagos, Ondo, Abeokuta mainly. I am venturing into other sources and this should become evident very soon!
Do you make all your products by yourself?
At the moment, all items are made by my fair hands. Haha.
Describe the process.
These are often completely separate. Sometimes I am in the mood to experiment and dream up crazy ideas and combinations. Other times I am designing the actual patterns for particular styles or I might just cut all day!
What are your plans for the future?
My hope and dream is that more and more people discover Urbanknit and that when they do they feel that have found something they enjoy wearing again and again. I want it to be a recognisable brand available in funky little boutiques in all the cool cities of the world!
Are there future plans for diversification?
Not just yet, I am more for perfecting each aspect I have taken on. Never say never though, I have so many things I dream of doing so its one step at a time.
Who is UrbanKnit’s target market?
That confident and bold lady who is young at heart, quirky, fashionable and who wants and appreciates something different and unique.
What advice do you have for up and coming bag and accessory designers?
Seems simple enough but you really have to like what you are designing and making. Do not underestimate the value of challenges and disappointments. The big lessons are learnt this way.
What are your fashion predictions for summer?
I have to say I have no idea!
Describe your sense of style.
Miscellaneous, haha, just looking for a way to say eclectic without sounding so predictable!
In one word you are?
