2013 MET Gala Punk: Chaos to Couture. Beauty Looks We Loved

Posted on: May 13th, 2013 by Juwon Ajayi No Comments

Last Monday happened to be my favorite event of the year. Some people look forward to the World Cup, others look forward to the Grammys. Me? I’m all about the Met Gala, the time of year when athletes, celebrities and socialites bond over their love of fashion.

It’s a grand time, my friends. A time when Katy Perry can wear this and no one blinks.

Anyway, while every site from Style.com to Laineygossip.com has reviewed the event and listed their favourite outfits of the night, I being the beauty junkie I am, have decided to focus on the best beauty looks.

The following Met Gala attendees make the list because they in my humble opinion, brought the punk.

Every year the gala has a theme. Past themes have been “Superheroes”, “Anglo Saxon”, etc.

This year, the theme was Punk: From Chaos to Couture.

Punk isn’t necessarily about black eyeliner and dyed roots. It’s a state of mind. It’s an “I don’t care” attitude. While it’s hard to act like you don’t care when you’re wearing couture, it is possible to have fun with it. I was disappointed at how few of the women, especially the fashion darlings, had fun with the theme.

I’m looking at you Kerry Washington.

Sigh. This event desperately needed some Rihanna.

Anyway, here are some of the ladies (and a couple of gentlemen) that did not disappoint in the beauty department.

Best Hair: Anne Hathaway.

Anne Hathaway totally owned the Met Gala. While some women’s attachment to their hair can rival their attachment to their children, Annie not only cut her long brunette locks for her Oscar-winning role in Les Miserables, she had no trouble bleaching it.

It is, after all, just hair.

Honourable Mention: Joan Smalls and her major ombre.

Best Eye Makeup: Kristen Stewart.

No one personifies the punk “I don’t care” attitude more than Kristen Stewart. On anyone else, her Stella McCartney outfit would have been unremarkable. On her? Androgynous perfection. But it was her beauty look that really made her stand out. In a sea of smokey eyes and spiked hair, Stewart seperated herself from the pack with a slick updo and red-hued eye shadow. She owned that look and  she kind of gave off a bit of a David Bowie vibe, right?

Honourable Mention: Jourdan Dunn, Lily Collins, January Jones.

Best Hair Accessory: Sarah Jessica Parker.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s hair piece. A Philip Treacy Punk hair piece. In a perfect balancing act, Parker personified punk: chaos to couture.  Would you expect anything less from the woman who brought Carrie Bradshaw to life?

Honourable Mention: Madonna and her wig, Sienna Miller and her studded headband.

Best All Around Punk Beauty Look: Nicole Richie.

Nicole Richie knows how to have fun. Isn’t that the impression you get from the tv star/fashion designer? This is the girl who dressed up as J.Lo (circa 2002) for Halloween one year. Richie makes the list because with her white hair and dark lips, she still maintains that laughing at it all attitude that makes her so cool.

Honourable Mention: Miley Cyrus.

Best Male Beauty Look: Zachary Quinto

I feel bad for men. I truly do. It’s so hard to stand out sartorially without being considered flamboyant. Flamboyance isn’t a bad thing but if it’s not an adjective a man wants used to be described, formal events can mean a revolving door of tuxedos. And beauty wise? Forget it. There’s rarely never any experimentation.

So I really have to give Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto credit for embracing the punk. Blue hair has never looked more debonair.

Honourable Mention:Pharrell Williams and his eyeliner.

Style House Files Interviews British Designer Matthew Williamson

Posted on: November 23rd, 2012 by Juwon Ajayi No Comments

Matthew Williamson

Matthew Williamson recently put time aside to chat with Style House Files about showing his latest collection during Lagos Fashion and Design Week, the future of the MW brand and, Twitter. Here’s what he said:

Style House Files: When we announced you would be the international guest designer for this year’s Lagos Fashion and Design Week, people were ridiculously excited! Why was Lagos one of the cities you chose to show your collection in?

Matthew Williamson: We have a very strong fan base in Nigeria in addition to having a presence with Temple Muse in Lagos. It was such a privilege to be able to support LFDW and to show the collection to our fans.

SHF: How have your travels influence your work?

MW: Travel and exoticism has always been such an important inspiration for my collections. New places and experience always leave such an impression on me and I like to explore them in my collections.

SHF: You are beloved by many famous fashionistas; do you ever design collections with a certain starlet in mind?

MW: The Matthew Williamson woman has a very distinct personality- she is feminine, free spirited and glamorous. I don’t design my collections with any one person in mind but my close friends often come to mind because they really reflect the spirit of the brand.

SHF: Your new shoe collection was the talk of London Fashion Week! What was the inspiration behind it?

MW: I wanted my first shoe collection to have a real point of difference and truly reflect the DNA of our brand. We have previously collaborated with some of the best and most celebrated shoe designers in the world, it seemed like such a natural and organic step to start the next chapter working with such a talented emerging talent. Joanne Stoker worked with us to translate the signature elements of the brand into this 12-piece collection.

SHF: Your debut collection, Electric Angels, really started what people consider the “Matthew Williamson aesthetic”; bold, vibrant colours and patterns. 15 years later, how do you keep your collections fresh while still honouring what your fans love about the brand?

MW: I have always loved women and designing pieces which celebrate them has remained integral to my designs. I am constantly inspired by new places and experience- I try to incorporate these in my designs each season which I hope lends a new perspective to my collections.

SHF: What has been the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

MW: I have been very lucky to have such strong support from those around me all of whom have given useful advice over the years. I don’t remember what she said exactly, but I have always been drawn to colour and will always remember a teacher I had who really inspired me to develop my use of it further.

SHF: What do you think every aspiring designer needs to do or know if they want to make it in the fashion industry?

MW: The fashion industry is tough-you do have to be prepared to take advice and criticism along the way, but having unwavering belief in your vision is essential.

SHF: You recently joined Twitter (welcome by the way). In your opinion, what kind of impact has social media had on fashion and your brand in particular?

MW: Digital media is revolutionising fashion and you can’t help but recognise its power. Our new Twitter account @MWWorld captures behind-the-scenes of the collections and studio, giving followers an insider view of my brand. I also Tweet from the same account, so that I can share my personal perspective.

SHF: What’s next for the Matthew Williamson brand?

MW: We are stepping into the next chapter of the brand and we hope to add new layers to the DNA.

There are few things we love more than accessories. The right jewelry and a cute pair of heels can take a pair of jeans and a tee from “Laundry day” to “Casual chicness”. So when CoutureLab sent us information about Kenyan-based fashion and accessory company Crea Africa, we swooned!

Founded by industry veterans Elisabetta Capolino, Cristina Cisilino and Annalisa Bernardi, CREA Africa is a mid-high end fashion accessory and lifestyle company that works with internationally recognized designers and luxury goods companies manufacturing product lines 100% in Africa. Isoken Ogiemwonyi with her fellow YCE recipients.

We’re a few weeks away from This year’s MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week but that doesn’t mean September wasn’t a busy month.  Some of our LFDW participants were busy  attending fashion events in London and Milan!

At the beginning of September, The MTN British Council Young Creative Entrepreneur (YCE) Awards, a British Council Platform that seeks to celebrate, support and connect leaders in the creative and cultural industries worldwide, shortlisted 12 candidates to win the prestigious prize and participate in the programme.  This year the MTN LFDW Awards judges selected Isoken Ogiemwonyi, co-founder of Lagos-based retail store L’Espace, as the winner. She won the MTN cash prize of N2,000,000 and a tour of London Fashion Week, where the British Council also hosted 30 other Young Creative Entrepreneurs from different parts of the world.

The Young Creative Entrepreneurs in London.

Speaking on the MTN LFDW2012 awards Ojoma Ochai, Assistant Country Manager at British Council, said ‘One of the main aims of the programme is to act as a launch pad to build future business for promising creative entrepreneurs. We are confident that Isoken and the L’Epsace team are innovators in the Nigerian retailer sector and have a clear vision and direction, this is one of the reasons we selected her.’

The LFDW week also returned to Milan during Milan Fashion week to exhibit the ‘Rhythm of Africa’ collective at the Touch!, neoZone, and cloudnine exhibition hosted by Pitti Immagine. The designers this year included:

MO SA’QUE, a footwear designer from Ghana
Adèle Dejak, an accessories designer from Kenya
Jewel By Lisa, Pitti Imagine W alumni and womenswear designer from Nigeria
Pearl XGH, from Ghana
Okapi Handbags, from South Africa
Tebazile jewelry, from Nigeria.

Speaking at the exhibition Omoyemi Akerele, founder of LFDW, said ‘Lagos Fashion and Design week is all about making an impact. The idea is to move beyond innovation and transform African brands to household names worldwide. The invitation to show during Milan Fashion Week for these designers is a significant milestone, one that is bound to catapult them into the international fashion industry.’ Akerele further added that international fashion retailers such as Luisa via Roma and Moda Operandi had already begun stocking some of the LFDW designers.

Nigerian label Jewel by Lisa was also selected by Vogue Italia in the ‘Who is On Next’ Vogue Talent exhibition which hosts the next big names in fashion.
