Biki’s Picks From Berlin Fashion Wk S/S 11

My favourite designers of the season were Dimitri (www.bydimitri.comand David Tomaszwewski (www.davidktom.com).

Dimitri

This was by far my favourite S/S 11 collection, I’ve said it before  and I’ll say it again- I am a huge fan of bold colour, print, texture and interesting silhouettes, and the Dimitri show had all of these attributes in abundance.  I also liked the ‘wandering traveller’ aspect to the collection which you could see through the choice of strong colours, ancient embroidery from the far East, prints and bold jewellery.

One of my favourite pieces in the collection was an outfit that consisted of a nude flouncy babydoll dress which was reigned in by a rather fetching brown leather bodice- it is this kind of conflict and contrast between hard and soft, innocence and kink- that I love to see work together (successfully) in a collection.

After attending this show, it came as no surprise to me, when I later read that the designer’s collection had been greatly inspired by a great aritst and sculpture called Richard Serra.  One of the things that had particularly fascinated David about the sculptor, which he later incorporated into his collection- was the ability to use hard materials and make them appear soft to the human eye.

The end result was a collection that had strong sculptural shapes which were all the more breath-taking due to the couture-esque detailing that was evident through the use of embellishment, feathers and show stopping head pieces.
