Lyndsey’s and I’s paths crossed last summer when Arise commissioned me to style a feature story for one of their issues.  One of my responsibilities for the job was to liase with the fashion editor and choose a model for the story.  I was given a bunch of models to look at and even though her portfolio (at the time) was lacking in terms of the amount of editorials on display, when compared to the other models; I was so taken by her wide-spread expressive doe-eyes that I put her as my first choice for the feature story.  Sometimes in this industry it really does pay to go with your gut-instincts and to have an ‘eye’.  I believe that these two attributes cannot be taught or learnt, you either have it or you don’t.  Luckily for me that day, my spider senses tingling led me to make the right choice because fast-forward a year later and Lyndsey’s CV, in true American teen lingo is- ‘out of control’.  Here is a little taster of what she has managed to achieved in under a year; she has walked the runway for fashion houses like Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, L’Wren Scott, Vera Wang and Calvin Klein.  Regarding the latter designer- Lyndsey was the first African-American model to walk his A/W 2009 show.  Respect.  She has also featured in high-profile magazines like Dazed & Confused, Teen Vogue, Pop and Elle as well as scored campaigns with DKNY and Baby Phat.

To be so young and have achieved so much in a profession where there is  a continuous hunt for the ‘next best youngest thing’ is truly commendable and its great that she hasn’t let the chemicals used to style her ever-changing locks go to her head; when she was asked in an interview about what was most important to her, her reply was her ‘family and friends’.

To really understand what all the fuss is about, I have selected some of her most captivating editorials and campaigns to date.  Remember in ANTM, that Tyra Banks is always barking at the MIT (models in training) to model from the hairs on their head to their tippy-top toes?  This is what she means-

I have always been intrigued with the history of fashion and believe in merging the past with the present. I spend all my free time online visiting blogs, reading books and watching anything that would inspire me.

As a fashion journalist and stylist the person takes priority, then the clothes and location. If these three things are right then be sure that result will be great pictures and editorials.

Styling the Elite Model Look Nigeria 2010 pre-show photo shoot and grand finale competition was truly unique as I believe this competition is all about sustainability and giving one girl every year the hope of making her dreams come true. For me styling the show this year was bringing out the best features in each girl.

For the photo shoot, I picked three designers that I believe their pieces are strong, distinct and wearable. Lanre da Silva Ajayi, Christie Brown and Bridget Awosika all make pieces for bold and fashionable women.

The makeup artist Yewande Peregrino and I agreed on using ‘washes of colour’ on the eyes with nude lips for some girls, a trend we are seeing on the catwalks of Osman, Michael Van Der Ham and Richard Nicoll this season. The rest of the girls where done up in smoky eyes complimented with red-hot lips to give them a demure and sexy look. Hair was kept very natural as I didn’t want anything that would take away too much from the clothes.

My greatest challenge styling this entire event was getting trendy shoes that fit the girls as well as carry the look at the end. As we in fashion know, Nigeria is still very much at the baby stage though we are growing very fast. There are no brand PR companies that we can call on to provide shoes and accessories, however I worked really well with what I had and it all turned out fantastic.

Toni Tones the photographer and I worked really well together and she brought each model to life in the pictures.

On the day of the show, backstage was manic as with any show in the world but I am used to working under pressure, it comes with the territory.

Elohor Aisien of Beth Modelling Agency, the organizer of Elite Model Look Nigeria is very professional. There was true team work and everyone knew what they were doing. There was respect and admiration for one another. It was a lovely experience and I would do it again!

Excerpts from the Interview……..

” FASHIZBLACK : How important is Fashion to you ? Has it always been the case since you were a child ?

Solange Knowles : Fashion is just another extension of expression.   Since I was a

little girl, I have always taken some kind of pride in  that expression.[...]

FASHIZBLACK : How do you judge your style’s evolution ? Does it match with your

artistic & musical evolution ? [...]

Solange Knowles : From 17 to until maybe 20 , I became a mom, I was in Idao, was a

stay at home mother, and my style was very very basic, I just  didn’t  have the time for the

looks. At the time, at the point  where I was  in my relationship, I sort of lost a sense of

myself.  I look back at those outfits and I’m like, who is this? Maybe I was trying to

become who my husband was attracted to or I tried to be what a mom should look like.

Then I got back to the music, got out of the relationship, and started to be drawn to this

influence again. It was all about that 60′s Pop culture, paired it with a very comfy hat or a

fun  pattern.  But I still hadn’t grasp the sense of mixing.

Over the past 2 years, it ( my style ) has definitely followed my music, which is a mix of

great 70′s and 80′s sounds. There are definitely some influences there. But I also started

to listen to a lot of great Afro beat music, and discovered amazing things that  you  can do

for example with Ankara, and mixing it up with main stream  pieces.  There are so many

great designers who just do this. I’ve been introduced to them, and I’m getting deeper and

deeper into this.
