Fashion Discussion: Off The Rack vs. Modify The Look

Deciding upon what to wear often times is split evenly between Off The Rack or Modify the Look. Arguably so, this has become one constant debate for fashion-forward women! When Zoe Saldana stepped out wearing two runway looks her way to two major red carpet events, you can say she decided upon the latter to best fit her personal style. Fashion is quite fun when you wear looks your way rather than straight off the runway or at best the rack. Zoe definitely follows through with knowing what works for her.

At the Miami premiere of her new film, Colombiana, Zoe added a white train to her gold Balmain long-sleeved embellished mini. To celebrate her Flaunt magazine feature, Zoe flipped her Prabal Gurung Spring 2011 neon top. Instead of pairing the white with black textured sleeve top over her neon pink tank she switched it. We imagine what made both looks looked enviable was of course, her best accessory – effortless confidence!

With this fashion discussion, much emphasis should be on your level of style. After all fashion is daring and exciting when you put your personal stamp on it, don’t you agree? Our question to you is do you prefer to wear a look completely off the rack or switch it up to suit your personal style?

SpiceTV, the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle Channel from the stable of CMA (Consolidated Media Associates) content provider of Soundcity, Tellevista and VillageSquare, entertained celebrities, the fashion savvy and fashion professionals at Spice Haute Party – a quarterly exclusive gathering of professionals in the fashion industry – fashion designers, stylists, pr consultants, photographers, make up artists, bloggers.. as well as musicians and technocrats.

Four Points by Sheraton’s pool side was the destination of choice to celebrate fashion, music and social networking. Guests were treated to canapes and fruit cocktails supplied by Henessey – the only option at the bar and it kept the party going into the early hours of the night. Don’t miss the next one!

The Fash Pack At The Arise – Belvedere Vodka Marquee With Temple Muse and Style House Files

Lagos, March 14 2011: On Friday night the Belvedere Vodka Marquee opened for the first time to an excited audience. VIP guests within the marquee marvelled at the all-white lounge, which had been meticulously assembled by the Belvedere Vodka team with creative direction by Temple Muse and StyleHouseFiles.

A pure white backdrop set the mood for the lounge, which featured dramatic floral centrepieces, silver crystal chandeliers and a stunning light projection of the Belvedere castle. Dotted around the white lounge were pristine white mannequins in pieces fresh off the runway that were alternated on a daily basis. The mannequins were part of an innovative and interactive fashion installation created by Temple Muse and StyleHouseFiles.

The installation included pieces from Eki Orleans, Nkwo, Anita Quansah, Tsemaye Binitie, Christie Brown, Maki Oh, Jewel by Lisa, Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Tiffany Amber, Odio Mimonet and other designers from the show.

The VIP Bar, with the beats from Temple Muse and DJ Caise’s funky house mixes, hosted international superstar Estelle; Wale Tinubu of Oando; This Day Chairman Nduka Obaigbena; ARISE Magazine editor Helen Jennings; fashion stylist Ola Shobowale; blues maestro Keziah Jones; fashion designers including Alexander Amosu, Ituen Basi, Maki Oh, Nkwo and LaQuan Smith; gorgeous models fresh off the runway; fashionable trendsetters and more.

River Island’s High Summer Collection 2011 Press Day

Who?- River Island, one of the most successful companies on the High Street with nearly 200 stores across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

When?- 3rd February 2011

Where?- In their London office which was transformed into a hedonistic beach party with candles, colouful lanterns, clay pots, woven baskets and shisha pipes thrown in for good measure.

Who attended?- Now this was the real kick, for the fist time River Island had a press day where only bloggers were invited to see the collection. So we got to see their High Summer collection before the journalists. Upon asking about the reason behind the new format, I was told that the bloggers event rose from the realisation that River Island customers and the general public want fashion fast. And blogs deliver exactly that to them-fashion in a fast, productive way-which in turn helps to nurture the relationship the brand has with their consumer and the blogging community.

Treats?- Oh yes indeed. There were canapes and cocktails being served whilst a DJ spun tunes on his deck. There was also a henna artist giving out free henna tattoos with glitter to boot! And if that wasn’t enough, there was a live shoot at the back of the showroom and the images were being instantly uploaded on an I-pad for all to see. Also on our departure we were given Bourjouis lipgloss in a shade of our choice.

But were the clothes any good?- Absolutely, the women’s collection was said to be inspired by the, ‘colours, tones, prints and fabrics of the Moroccan city of Marrakech’ and ‘capturing the look and feel of the 70′s’. With this collection scoring high points in the chic and sexy factor, River Island couldn’t be more bang on trend with the Glamour trend that is set for 2011. Pieces like printed palazzo pants, drape printed kaftans in spicy colours, cut out printed bathing suits accessorized with statement large shades, wide brimmed hats, print wedges- helped to drive the point fashionably home.

Here are some of the pictures I took of my favourite pieces from the collection-

J’adore this fringed number with colour tones that visually transport you to the clear turquoise seas of any exotic island. However if you want to stay firmly grounded, that cute houndstooth platform number should do the trick.

This bold orange top with gold embellishment, will ensure that all eyes stay transfixed on you at any sunset. The matching statement necklace also compliments this fringed beauty to perfection.

The 70′s was not the only era that River Island gave a nod to for their collection, this tropical bathing ensemble shows that the 50′s ultra- feminine silhouette, is still very much in vogue.

Who needs arm candy when you have this vibrant, multi-colourful, print bag that can carry your essentials from the beach to any after-hours barbecue party?

Animal print is always a re-current feline hit on the trend list and this season is no different. For those who want to literally kick their wedged heels off and relax, the brown sandals are a good way to ease your feet into a chilled holiday.

The key to accessorising is all in the detailing, which is why I heart these fun and youthful tortoise shell ‘heart’ sunglasses. Lolita, eat your heart out.

I can’t and haven’t been able to wear high-heeled shoes for about a decade now. But just because ‘I don’t eat at the restaurant, doesn’t mean I can’t hear the specials’, and so I can always appreciate a fabulous pair of shoes- especially if they have colouful rope detail or are made out of intricate crochet with muted tones.
