Banke Kuku on Selfridges 4th Floor

BK (Banke Kuku) Textiles, creator of bespoke woven and printed fabrics for the fashion and interior industry can now be found nestled in Selfridges among other luxury lifestyle brands such as Missoni and DVF. A product range of 60cm x 60cm cousins/poofs are now available for purchase and on display in Selfridges Sleep Section on the departmental store’s 4th Floor.

The label’s Creative Director Banke Kuku studied Textile Design at Central St Martins and Chelsea Art College and has since collaborated with designers such as Duro Olowu, Jasmine di Milo and Jewel by Lisa.

BK Textiles is one of 10 designers set to feature at “Tales by Moonlight: A Fashion Folklore”,  a static exhibition presented by Style House Files at British Council and British Fashion Council’s International Fashion Showcase 2012.

U.Mi- 1 Installation at Radisson

Following a successful presentation at MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week, U.Mi-1 (pronounced you.me.one) launched its Pop-up boutique at the Radisson Blu Hotel on 31st October 2011. It’s that time of the year again! The Royal Wedding may be far from over, but the S/S’ 11 ’Romance Trend’ is still soaring high in the stylish charts.  Hot on the heels of this trend is the ultimate, innocent and virginal hue- White, followed by the fabric of the season- Lace.

My tips on how to take this suggestive piece from catwalk to real-life are-

1. Wear a slip-  often on the catwalk, the designer wants to show off the lines and fall of their garments to perfection which can involve showing off the pieces in their ‘rawest form’.  Sometimes this leads to a boob poking out there, an outline of g-string here and no one bats an eyelid at this during fashion shows.  However in real-life, I assure you that eyelashes will  flutter if you wore this skirt without a slip- and for all the wrong reasons!

2. Tone down what you wear on the upper half- personally, even on the catwalk, I would never have juxtaposed a whimsical white cotton lace skirt with the hard, structured top, which is pictured above.  The two pieces are polar opposites in terms of tone, style, shape and fabric and are trying too hard to compete with one another to vy for our attention.  In terms of colour combinations,  the fail-safe way to go is the  black and white route.  You will look like the epitomy of sophisticated minimalism.  Texture-wise, I would advise to keep this look soft and delicate by wearing blouses, vest-tops or jackets that are made out of light-weight fabrics like-cotton broderie anglaise.
