Jewel by Lisa’s Autumn/Winter 2011 collection is Africa’s definition of global luxury. The label has mastered the art of print, through the juxtaposition of textures, colours & shapes using Ankara and custom made luxurious fabrics. The collection, another strong and well thought-out approach to print, is a marriage between ‘Africa’ and ‘modern’, a theme that has become synonymous with the label.
Channeling women like Giovanna Battaglia, Olivia Palermo, and Shala Monroque as muses, Lisa has been inspired not only by their ability to string together a style that explores a youthfulness that most women yearn for but also an understanding of the art of classic dressing which for most comes only with an inherent fashion know-how. Above this, Lisa salutes the fashion aplomb of the Nigerian woman who when draped in her native attire, be it the ankara, the lace, or the aso-oke, epitomizes style.
These women – the western and the African – have become one. The divide that once existed is not only blurred but is now extinct. Lisa effectively proves this by creating a collection with ultra-modern ensembles that reflects a globalized fashion.
The prints are a natural progression from the SS 2011 collection of strong geometric brights. With the A/W 2011 collection, they represent a richness and sophistication with playful nuances. In choice colours ranging from variations of lilac pink to English ivy and tobacco brown; the textiles form shapes of tapestry batik, crocodile prints, and afro-geometrics reminiscent of the vintage African mud cloth in textures of Velvet, Shantung, Linen, Crepe silk & satin, Silk chiffon, and complementary Ankaras; all crafted with intricate hand embellishment, the label’s signature. Juxtaposed alongside the custom prints are lace and leather accents creating both a soft and tough feel.
The garments combine coolness and craftsmanship with youthful exuberance and easy glam. They provoke elegance, femininity, functionality, and modernity.
After showing an outstanding & well received collection at the Arise Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos, Jewel by Lisa was chosen among five designers to represent Africa at New York Fashion Week in September 2011.
