Funmi Odulate, writer and beauty guru extraordinaire gives us tips on how to care for our beautiful, oily black skin… Finally, something for us by us.
Q How can I combat oily skin?
FUNMI No matter how many times I’m told that my somewhat oily complexion means less wrinkles at 80, it doesn’t feel like a blessing. However, armed with the right products, oily skin can be shine-free and beautiful.
Using harsh, ‘paint-stripper’ cleansers is not the answer – they will make the skin produce even more oil. Instead, look for oil – based ones. I love Darphin Aromatic Cleansing Balm (£54), which removes every last trace of make-up and dirt, leaving my skin silky soft. Moisturising is essential too, I swear by Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Cream (£38.80), which is light yet incredibly hydrating. Then, before applying make-up, I use Bliss Instant Mattification Gel (£28) to reduce pore size and eliminate shine. For a great base in dark shades, check out the extensive ranges of Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier oil-free foundations.
Finally, pack MAC’s Blot Film sheets (£10) in your bag for instant touch-ups. They’re brilliant for shine-free skin all day.
