Trend roundup for Fall 2010

Zac Posen

A new season is fast creeping upon us and to save you the trouble disecting what direction to look at, SHF has picked the top 10 most relevant trends for Fall 2010.

1. Blackout—this is a colour that is synonymous to the Fall season, so it was not surprising to see the colour featured heavily in most collections. It was interesting to see how designers like AcquascutumAlexander Wang and Vera Wang put their own spin on the classic colour by using various types of shape, form and fabric. And as usual where the colour black goes; the ‘goth’ is sure to follow and designers like Fashion East resurrected this look by sending models down the catwalk in pink & multi-coloured long hair extensions, black PVC mini’s and bra tops. The latter look is only for the brave!

2. Metallic Bling—as if in defiance to the recession, designers razzled and dazzled us with their metallic and embellishment choices this season- Michael Kors featured sequin jersey gowns (which sets of a glamorous eveningwear look to perfection) and silver puffer jackets, Fashion East went back to the future by using silver metallic bandeau tops and skirts, Diane Von Furstenberg used sweaters encrusted with colourful beading and metal links and Isaac Mizrahi’s bronze and silver jackets were decorated with metallic sequins and studs. His shift dresses also set the catwalk alight as they were decorated with colourful jewels.

3. ‘In your face’ Prints—this trend fell under two main camps- floral and graphic. Zac Posen favoured flirty floral chiffon dresses, Basso and Brooke broke the mould by showing some garments that had print collages of marble, mosaic, textile and animal skin which had a ‘high gloss aqua finish’ giving some of the prints a liquid 3-D sheen; whilst House of Holland used mainly graphic prints.

4. Delicate Draping—this season designers revelled in the softer and more sensual side of fashion, what is so great about this cut as opposed to the ‘sharper angular cut’- is that the former is kinder to the ‘everyday woman’s’ figure. BCBG Max Azria showed that this fluid silhouette looks great in soft silks and shades of silver-grey. Whilst designers like Roksanda Illincic and Mark Fast were more experimental using shades like fuschia, olive and marine blue.

5. Slick TailoringRalph Lauren used slim fitted tweed jackets and trousers, Calvin Klein shared his minimalistic view by offering us pieces like a black suit jacket worn with cropped trousers and Burberry Prorsum added military detailing to his array of double breasted jackets. Whichever style of jacket you decide to invest in this season, make sure that like the Jason Wu models-you pair it with a white blouse and a pair of black slouchy skinny trousers.

6. 1940’s Hollywood GlamourCaroline Herrera’s collection had the essence of Hollywood 40’s icon- Lauren Bacall- with the use of suits that featured high waisted full trousers, fur coats and leather gloves. Speaking of which, the one ‘must have’ accessory to perfect this look has to be gloves. This accessory made a consistent appearance on the Fall catwalk and came in different textures and lengths to accentuate the ‘lady-like’ look of some of the collections.

7. So Transparent—the temperature will be sure to drop this Fall, but designers like Alexander Wang, Charlotte Ronson and Isaac Mizrahi kept things heated by using hints of sheer detailing in some of their garments.

8. Boho Retro—Zac Posen gave a nod to this trend by sending his models down in skinny flared velvet trousers whilst designers like Charlotte Ronson, Diana Von Furstenberg and Richard Chai Love layered dresses overtrousers.

9. Lady in Red—this Fall, bold colour was seen in most designer’s collection but the most prominent and repeated colour was red. It came in all sorts of shades and textures. Narciso Rodriguez favoured red crimson silk whilst Charles Anastase, Lacoste and Duro Olowu used burgundy red knitwear.

10. Belt-up—this season designers favoured thin belts as opposed to the more blatantly sexy thicker corset-style belts. Caroline Herrera used them to accentuate her floor length evening gowns whilst Tibi used narrow belts to streamline otherwise bulky cardigans and jackets. In favour of the ‘preppy chic’ look, some of Diane Von Furstenberg’s models wore thin belts over their buttoned up blouses and jumpers.
